Elements Saturday Evening Talks: Scottish Stones, Historical & Contemporary

Join us in the stunning showroom of Lyon & Turnbull Auctioneers for an evening panel discussion with historian Dr Sarah Laurenson and Jewellers and Elements Exhibitors Stefanie Cheong and Sian Evans. With interest and skill in stone carving and lapidary, Stefanie and Sian have incorporated the rich history of Scottish stones into their jewellery design. Much of their work features Scottish Agates, fossils and stones found in locations like Dunure, St Cyrus and the River Tay, linking their work to the rich cultural history of Scotland's jewellery industry. Stefanie and Sian have interpreted these ancient materials in a modern context, creating contemporary work with a rich connection to the natural world. This connects to Dr Laurenson's extensive research on the historic use of materials found in Scotland's natural landscape, such as gold and silver, crystals, stones, freshwater pearls, and shells.

We invite you to arrive at Lyon & Turnbull from 5:30pm. Talks will begin promptly at 6pm.

Your ticket to the evening talks includes the price of admission to Elements during our opening hours:

  • Friday 27 October, 11am-5pm

  • Saturday 28 October, 11am-5pm

  • Sunday 29 October, 11am-4pm

Dr Sarah Laurenson is Principal Curator of Modern and Contemporary History and Head of the Modern and Contemporary History Section at the National Museum of Scotland. Sarah's broad research interests span the period of Scottish history from 1750 to the present day with an emphasis on Scottish cultures and identities, and on the ways in which shifting engagement with the physical landscape and natural environment has shaped – and continues to shape – the material world. Dr Laurenson is the author of the recently published The Material Landscapes of Scotland’s Jewellery Craft, 1780-1914, providing a rich and detail ed cultural history of jewellery production in Scotland.

Stefanie Ying Lin Cheong is a designer and maker who explores geology and rock formations to inform her work. She brings a contemporary aesthetic to traditional lapidary process by cutting found and discarded rock and creating jewellery and objects. Often these are paired with recycled and fair trade metals. She started using Scottish found rock but recently she has also introduced making her own rocks from waste streams such as e-waste, plastics, glass and ceramics.

Sian Evans is a British Jewellery designer, from Dorset, living and working in London. Sian’s work is inspired by interests in archaeology, fashion, geology nature and sustainable technologies; the history of tools, materials and making have informed her collections since she started her creative practice in 1986 . She has won many awards over the years and her work is in the V & A collection. She was awarded a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust grand in 2022 to extend her study into stone carving and lapidary techniques pursuing learning into Intaglio and Cameo carving in hardstone.

The Main Level of Lyon & Turnbull is accessible via the temporary ramp at the front stairs. Lyon & Turnbull is a Grade-A listed building, and the building does not allow for elevators, so the upstairs is not wheelchair accessible. Lyon & Turnbull do not have disabled toilets.

Saturday, 7 November 2020 from 14:00-15:00

‘Garnets are a very misunderstood and often overlooked gemstone. When you consider the range of colours available, the optical effects that they can show, and the history behind some of them, their level of use in the jewellery trade seems far below their true potential.

Join Andrew, a tutor at Birmingham City University, for a look at garnets, their varieties and uses, and see if you agree that they really are a beautiful alternative to other gems.’

Discussion with Kerry Gregory of Gemmology Rocks

Saturday, 7 November 2020 from 16:00-17:00

‘As a jeweller or jewellery buyer, do you need to be a qualified gemmologist?

The simple answer is no!

BUT, everyone working in the jewellery industry, or even considering buying a gemstone, needs an appropriate level gemstone knowledge. Kerry will guide you through what's out there that makes this necessary, the potential issues out there for the uneducated, as well as the much greater benefits of being "gemmed up", and how to get the Goldilocks level of Gemmology.’

In Conversation: Marie Walshe of Sorrel Bay Fine Jewellery

Saturday, 7 November 2020 from 11:00-11:45

Marie Walshe, a goldsmith for twenty years, is behind her brand Sorrel Bay Fine Jewellery, named after her beautiful daughter. Her collections are crafted using traditional goldsmithing skills, inspired by ancient cultures and reveling in a ‘man made’ natural finish. Marie’s passion for gemology and the geology behind them, along with her ethical beliefs, mean that sustainability and traceability play a large role in the sourcing of her raw materials. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and precious, small treasures and future heirlooms. The brands’ ethos passionately promotes British-made, hand-crafted conscious luxury.

Session now sold out.

In Conversation: Annie Ruthven-Taggart of Argems Jewellery

Saturday, 7 November 2020 from 12:15-13:00

Annie Ruthven-Taggart of Artgems Jewellery works in fair trade precious metals and semiprecious stones to create three-dimensional sculptural forms inspired by marine life and geological structures. Hand cut watercolour paper shapes are milled on to fine silver and 18ct gold creating a graphic element to the work and echoing the sculptural forms. Particular attention is given to the interrelationships between elements, how they intersect and the harmony of composition between them. Miniature hinge mechanisms are used to create highly wearable jewellery with a fluidity of movement. Great attention is given to the finishing of each piece to compliment the delicacy of the surface textures.

Session now sold out.

In Conversation: Ana Simoes of Ana Simoes Jewellery

Ana Simoes trained as a designer-jeweller and gem-setter in Portugal and in the UK. She worked as a jeweller in London before relocating to Plymouth in 2016 where she designs and handcrafts her work. Ana’s jewellery pays homage to her Portuguese and Moorish heritage, and to the country’s unique architecture. The colourful ornamental repeat-patterns seen in Portuguese tiles are celebrated through the use of yellow gold and gemstones. An avid user of computer aided design (CAD), 3D printing and lost-wax casting; Ana combines traditional jewellery making techniques and contemporary design skills to create timeless jewellery pieces with a distinctive aesthetic.

In Conversation: Lauren Davidson of Ellie Air Jewellery

Sunday, 8 November 2020 from 11:45-12:30

In Conversation: Eve Balashova of Evgeniia Balashova Jewellery

Sunday, 8 November from 13:00-13:45

Jewellery by Evgeniia Balashova is a visually captivating and tactile experience created using a combination of 3D printing and traditional hand skills. Each piece from Eve’s collection is a careful manipulation of weight, texture and kinetic qualities of 3D printed nylon and precious metals brought together in a quest to find harmony between these contrasting materials. Eve breathes in vibrancy into simple geometric forms using 3D modelling and handcrafts precious metal components using ancient metalworking techniques, various ways of metal forming, wire drawing and soldering. She works in Glasgow and exhibits her work in the UK and internationally.

In Conversation: Caitlin Hegney

Sunday, 8 November 2020 from 14:15-15:00

Caitlin Hegney is a Scottish jeweller who celebrates Ancient Heritage in her work, exploring rhythmic markings in metal and reclaimed wood. Caitlin is fascinated by the communicative value of lines and how their ambiguity transcends and resonates with humanity. Caitlin’s practice energises traditional metalworking and woodworking techniques. She hammers into metal with hand forged tools and draws with wire. Wood is carved and dyed to celebrate the inherent rhythmic wood grain. Caitlin’s practice is driven by the unpredictability of process; the shade of dyed wood or quality of line in metal takes on its own personality in a sequence.

In Conversation: Ellis Mhairi Cameron

Sunday, 8 November 2020 from 16:45-17:30

Ellis Mhairi Cameron is a Scottish fine jeweller. She creates sculptural fine jewellery, inspired by her Scottish Heritage. Inspiration is taken from the landscape and the medieval jewellery hoards which have been found across the Scottish Highlands. Ellis uses traditional techniques and hand skills to give her pieces their signature rugged aesthetic. Working in gold and diamonds, each piece is a fusion of intricacy and erosion. At the foundation of her work is a belief in the beauty of imperfections, hand craftsmanship and a desire to provide clients with jewellery which can be handed down throughout the generations.

The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust Raffle
Oct

The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust Raffle

The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust Raffle is an opportunity for us to raise funds for the charitable work of The Incorporation of Goldsmiths. As a small arts charity operating in the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic we are now having to diversify and fundraise for all our projects and programmes. This fundraiser, along with donations and grants, will support our work at The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust and help preserve it during this challenging year and for the future.

Funds raised through this raffle will be targeted to directly support Jewellers and Silversmiths at student and emerging maker level through three programmes: Precious Metal Grants, an annual grant given to each of the Scottish Art Colleges teaching Jewellery at HND level and above; the Ethical Making Pledge supporting transition to sustainable and responsible procurement of metals and workshop practice; and support for a reduced emerging maker stand cost at Elements. The funds raised through this raffle will make an enormous difference in the work we undertake to protect, promote, and preserve the craft of Jewellery and Silversmithing in Scotland. We are committed to providing students in Scotland with access to precious metals, and these funds will help to remove the barriers of expense for students of all economic backgrounds so they can continue to develop their skills.

We are in awe of the immense generosity of those who have graciously donated items for this years’ raffle, with the retail value of all pieces estimated at more than £3,500. It is our goal to reach this value and beyond!

Tickets are now available for £10/ticket, and there is no limit on the number an individual can purchase. Each ticket is one entry to win one of 20+ items donated by professional, skilled makers from across the UK. Winners will be drawn at the closing event of Elements: A Festival of Jewellery, Silver and Gold on 8 November 2020. All winners will be contacted by e-mail the following week.
